emmaandjames.com: why a custom domain makes your wedding easier

A custom domain for your wedding website — an address like emmaandjames.com instead of a long platform URL — costs about €10–15 a year and solves a very specific problem: making your website's address something you can write on a paper invitation, read out over the phone to a grandmother and remember without writing it down. It is the difference between "go to platform-dot-com slash weddings slash e-j-two-zero-two-six" and "go to emmaandjames dot com". In this article: what exactly it gives you, how to choose one and what happens to it once the wedding is over.

The problem with long addresses

Every wedding website lives at some address. If you use a free platform or the basic plan of any tool, that address is usually a subdomain: something like mywedding.platform.com/emma-and-james-2027. It works perfectly… as long as it is shared with one tap on WhatsApp. The problem appears the moment the address leaves the screen:

  • On the printed invitation it becomes a string of letters nobody will type without mistakes.
  • Read out over the phone ("no, hyphen, not underscore… forward slash") it is a scene we have all lived through.
  • In word of mouth — "look it up on the couple's website" — nobody remembers a 60-character URL.

A custom domain removes the problem at the root: your names, dot com. It can be written, spoken and remembered.

What every piece of your wedding gains

  • The paper invitation. "All the details and RSVPs at emmaandjames.com" is an elegant line that fits any design. The calligraphy of an invitation was not made for slashes and hyphens.
  • The QR code. Any tool can generate a QR wherever it points, but think about the moment of scanning: under the code you should always print the address for whoever prefers not to use the camera. With a custom domain that line is beautiful; without one, it is contract small print.
  • The Save the Date. As we explain in our Save the Date guide, the ideal is to send it with the website already live. A memorable address multiplies the visits: people type it from memory weeks later.
  • The email and the WhatsApp group. A short address gets shared without fear of it breaking or being cut when copied.
  • The RSVPs. Every bit of friction costs replies. If confirming is "go to emmaandjames.com and tap RSVP", you have removed the first obstacle on the path (here is the full system for getting replies).

How to choose a good wedding domain

  • Your names, in the order that sounds natural: emmaandjames.com. It is the standard because it works.
  • If it is taken, try variants: with or without "and" (emmajames.com), full names, or adding the year (emmaandjames2027.com). Avoid hyphens: they are terrible to dictate.
  • .com first, your country code as a worthy runner-up. Those are the endings people type from memory. Steer clear of exotic endings that force you to explain "no, it's not dot com, it's dot wedding".
  • Short beats descriptive: nobody needs ourwedding-emmaandjames.com.
  • Test it out loud. If you have to spell something when saying it, keep looking.

And after the wedding? The domain is still yours

Here is the part almost nobody tells you: the domain does not expire with the wedding. After the big day, many couples turn the website into something else:

  • The public album: you swap the countdown for the official photos and everyone already has the link saved. Guests come back on their own to see the pictures.
  • The thank-you page, with a note to your guests and the best images of the day.
  • A frozen keepsake: you can also simply leave it be. Coming back to emmaandjames.com on your first anniversary, with the website exactly as it was, is a little trip in time.

And if one day you stop renewing it, no harm done: it will have served its purpose in the year that mattered.

What it costs and how it is set up

A .com domain costs €10–15 a year at any registrar. The technical part — connecting it to the website, the security certificate, the redirects — is where a platform saves you the headache. At Weddara, the Premium plan (€149, VAT included) includes a custom domain with the first year paid: you tell us the name you want, we check it is free and we leave it working — without you needing to know what a DNS is. On the Essential plan (€89) the website lives at a free Weddara address, short and presentable, which you can always upgrade to a custom domain later.

In short

A custom domain is one of the best value-for-money upgrades of the whole wedding: for the price of two coffees a month it makes your website work just as well on paper, over the phone and from memory — and it leaves you a keepsake at your very own address. If you are creating your website now, pick a template and get it published today; the domain is added in one step.
